Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Overview:

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Processor

After Samsung couldn’t overcome the performance criticism of the Exynos chip, Samsung has finally switched to Snapdragon with the new S23 series. As a Qualcomm representative months before February’s Unpacked event, the Galaxy S23 series would be a full Snapdragon affair.

Samsung appears to be an overclocked version of the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip to be used in the S23 Ultra. Notably, the “Prime” Arm Cortex-X3 core is clocked at 3.36GHz higher than the usual 3. 2 GHz. Similarly, the Immortalis-based Adreno 740 also has a higher clock speed of 719 MHz in the S23 Ultra.

This is a custom built version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 designed specifically for Samsung’s flagship phone. therefore, it is subject to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy Marketing Terms.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy S23 Ultra

This Snapdragon for Galaxy partnership isn’t unique and it looks like it will be extended to next year’s S24 Ultra as well. Samsung is rumored to be planning to keep this partnership pending the development of a more efficient internal chipset for its flagship smartphones.

200MP ISOCELL HP2 Sensor

After several years of using 108-megapixel sensors to perfect them, Samsung has now moved to 200-megapixel cameras with the S23 Ultra. Of course, the 200-megapixel sensor is nothing new, as many phones in 2022 had it. Rumors of a 200-megapixel Samsung phone also date back to early 2021.

The first 200-megapixel camera phone was the Motorola X30 Pro with ISOCELL HP1 sensor. This first 200MP image sensor for smartphones, manufactured by Samsung, was not mass-produced until .

Since then, Samsung has also introduced several other 200-megapixel sensors, ISOCELL HP3 and HPX, to cheaper phones. The latter is reserved for Chinese phones like the Note 12 series.

The recent surge in smartphones with 200MP cameras is also due to chipset makers recently adding hardware support for 200MP cameras to their chips. All latest Android flagship chipsets like Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and MediaTek Dimensity 9200 have native support for it. In addition, the is also available in mid-range chipsets such as Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 and Dimension 1080.

Samsung ISOCELL HP1 200MP Sensor

That means the S23 Ultra does not use any of the sensors mentioned above. Samsung has unveiled a brand new sensor for its best smartphone of 2023 dubbed ISOCELL HP2.

It’s a flagship 200-megapixel sensor specially designed for the S23 Ultra, with a 1/1.3” sensor with 0.6 µm pixels. This places it between the HP1 and HP3, which have 1/1.22″ and 1/1.4″ sensors respectively. The new sensor captures 12.5 megapixel photos with standard 16:1 pixel binning.

Similarly, it enables 8K recording at 30 fps, up from 24 fps in previous generations.

The rest of the camera setup is pretty much the same. We consider two telephoto lenses with 3x and 10x optical zoom respectively. While initial leaks suggested both telephoto lenses were 12-megapixels, they are officially listed as 10-megapixel sensors.

Night Photography

One of the main benefits of using a higher resolution camera is that it increases digital zoom. With more megapixels, you can enlarge a specific part of an image by cropping it while preserving a lot of detail.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Night Photography

With the HP2’s 200-megapixel ISOCELL camera, Samsung claims to achieve what it calls “epic night photography”. Now you can capture the moving night sky with the new Astro Hyperlapse built into the S23 Ultra.

You’ll get sharper, smoother videos at night too, thanks to Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and nose reduction. The company has also worked on night portraits.

By the way, Samsung also allows 8K video recordings at 30fps on the S23 Ultra. Previously, the S22 Ultra could only record 8K videos at 24 fps.

Other Specs

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra features a 6.8-inch AMOLED 2X display. It is the only model in the series that offers a QHD+ resolution of 3088 x 1440 pixels. However,, the phone has an adaptive refresh rate from 1Hz to 129Hz as well as an improved Vision Booster solution. Also, the maximum brightness is 1750 nits.

Samsung S23 Ultra is one of the first phones to be protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2. The phone has Armor aluminum frame and IP68 dust and water resistance.

However, the design and construction of the device has not really changed. You get the same Armor aluminum frames we saw on the S22 Ultra.

It packs a 5,000mAh battery with support for 45W fast charging. The phone comes with the latest One UI 5.1 skin based on Android 13. As expected, Samsung also offers Android updates for at least 4 years. The phone also has an integrated S Pen.
